Part #5-deconstruction of memory

Multi-part intercultural dance installation, 6 solo dance theater miniatures in juxtaposition // thematic focus: memory – identity – origin – heritage

Co-production by IPtanz (D), Maya Dance Theatre (SGP), Ildikó Mándy Dance (H)

“Not knowing what happened before you were born means always remaining a child.”- Cicero

In the beginning there is silence. What has happened loses its clarity, remains fragmentary, is reinterpreted and becomes the new reality. The disappearance of memory is linked to questions of identity and origin. What is the significance of the heritage that we carry within us from previous generations – historical, human, genetic, psychological?

Dancers from two generations each from Singapore, Budapest and Cologne provide choreographic insights against the backdrop of family histories.

Booking recommended as the number of participants is limited.

All BarnesCrossing events are preceded by a physical and sensory introduction to the production led by Diana Treder 60 minutes before the start of the event. Please register in advance due to the limited number of participants.

On September 6 and 8, a touch tour and audio description will be offered for people who are blind or have a visual impairment. Please register in advance.

The artists will be available for discussions after the events

absence#5 – deconstruction of memory

A multimedia dance installation with 6 solo dance theater miniatures on the topic: memory – identity – origin – heritage

Six solo dance theater miniatures by six choreographers: each bringing the theme of the evening to the stage from different perspectives: Ilona Paszthy, co-founder of IPtanz (Cologne), Kavitha Krishnan from Singapore and the Hungarian Ildikó Mándy, additionally inviting 3 young choreographers from the respective countries to each create a solo on the theme from their own perspectives.

The connecting element of the individual performances is a stage object by the visual artist miegL, which adapts to different spatial and stage situations and gives the respective solos maximum scope for development. The interplay of musical and visual elements, including those of animation artist Anna Mahendra and Hungarian musician Zsolt Varga, creates an atmospheric kaleidoscope in which the audience can determine their own perspective in the space and search for it again and again.

Epigenetics states that traumatic experiences influence DNA and are passed on to subsequent generations. In 2017, researchers at Pompeu Fabra University discovered that influences such as fear, hunger and pain can be passed on for up to 14 generations. Epigenetic factors do not change the DNA itself, but its readability for the body. This influences personal decisions and the confrontation with one’s own identity and future.

The solos by the artists Kavitha Krishnan (Singapore), Ildikó Mándy (HU) and Ilona Pászthy (D) are inspired by their family history.

Solo 1: Ilona Pászthy/Germany: During the Corona period, Ilona Pászthy developed a documentary solo dance theater that deals with personal experiences and the life story of my ancestors during the Nazi era. It metaphorically illuminates followership and perpetration and questions identity, origin and epigenetic traces. The production combines documentary material, memories, interviews with contemporary witnesses, animations and a stage object that provides space for the deconstruction and reconstruction of different life paths and the thematization of silence.

Solo 2: Kavitha Krishnan / SINGAPORE: Theme: Memory/origin viewed in a multi-cultural society between Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. In the memory of the mother/daughter relationship, she takes a look at her life as a self-determined woman in a traditional country and the tension between artistic work and political structures.

Solo 3: Ildikó Mándy / HUNGARY: A look at the transformation of memory, determined by the context of political influences and generational change. History and culture pose questions about power mechanisms and free spaces.

She describes it as follows: “Hungary is a large basin framed by the Alps, without a sea. Influenced by Turkish, Austro-German and Russian cultural history. Does this influence the personal memories of families? Wars, oppression, limitation. Is there any special Hungarian heritage? A search in the field of tension between secrets and history, the ups and downs of passing, loss, absence, gaining and losing.

Solo 4, Solo 5 and Solo 6: Each artist invites a dance artist of a younger generation from their country to create their own solo on the same theme from their perspective. Both the age and the temporal shift in the relationship to the thematic complex open up different/new approaches and perspectives.
