Congratulations!

Our partner festival in Budapest took place this year in Poland, because the theater in Hungary had to close because of the energy price increase.
The winning duo 2022 “Remenance” Mira Rosa Plikat and Miriam Reck, which we sent there as a participant choreography, also won the prize “Best Duo” there.

Laudatio:
In their duo „Remenance“ Mira Rosa Plikat and Miriam Reck ( choreographed by Selina Koch and Mira Rosa Plikat ) explore the theme of symbiosis in an act of radical reduction. In their process from embracing to splitting they communicate a deep internal awareness ovecoming the limitation of sexual gender. The slowness of their motion allows us to observe the physicality of their interaction and creates the space for our imagination. They achieved not only an intriguing sculptural effect but created a multidimensional sensoric experience which was mesmerising.Translated with DeepL

At the award ceremony on May 22, 15:00 the jury Roos van Berkel / NL, Ildikó Mándy / HU, Christina Maria Purkert /D awarded the following prizes – see also laudations:

  • Best Dancer/Performer: Paula Niehoff

The jury prizes include an invitation to the SzólóDúo Fesztivál in Budapest in January 2023 for all prize winners (the prize money is used to cover travel and accommodation costs and is offered by the Kunstsalonstiftung. The awarded Solo and the awarded Duo will additionally receive an invitation to the Almada international Dance Festival 2022 in Portugal.
The prize money for these two productions will be increased by the amount of the travel expenses, this will also be covered by the Kunstsalonstiftung (per awarded solo 400 € / per awarded duo 800 €).

The following audience prizes were awarded by the audience:

FRIDAY:

Bestes Solo: A perfect match (?) Paulina Jürges

Bestes Duo: 24 hours Mihyun Ko und Jay Park

SATURDAY:

Bestes Solo: Smadar Goshen Lucy in the sky

Bestes Duo: Remanenz Mira Rosa Plikat, Selina Koch

LAUDATIONS:

Best Solo: ’She comes in on clouds’ by Sten Rudstrom

‘She comes in on clouds’ by Stem Rudstrom is a poetic solo with a gestural language that is very pure and multifaceted. His use of text flows from the movement, generates a subtle sense of humour and opens up more layers of imagination. Rudstrom’s use of time and space creates a sphere that softens our perception of boundaries.

Best Duo: ‘A strati’ by Beatrice Panero and Dario Rigaglia

‘A strati’ by Beatrice Panero and Dario Rigaglia begins with a very chrystallized scenographic idea. It introduces a diagonal line of white light on the floor that seems to be a border that attracts and repels the two dancers like waves rolling up to and away from the seashore. The choreography convinces further with a clear and somewhat minimal use of direction and repetition. The connection between the two dancers is tender and their performativity has a natural looking clarity.

Best Solo Newcomer: ‘A perfect match (?)’ by Paulina Jürges

Covered in a big pile of clothes with two legs appearing, the dancer-creature balances between an awakening monster and a gracious flamingo. Paulina Jürges proposes an interesting concept performed with an abundance of theatricality. As a jury, we see potential to further explore the non-human imagery in relation to the topic of overconsumption.

13. INTERNATIONALES TANZFESTIVAL SOLODUO NRW + FRIENDS – 2020

13th SoloDuo nrw + friends international dance festival Cologne

digital edition

May, 21st – 23rd 2021

Announcement of winners

For the thirteenth time BARNES CROSSING organised the international dance festival SoloDuo nrw + friends in Cologne from 21st-23rd May 2021 and again cooperated with Budapest’s SzólóDuó Táncfesztivál and – since last year – the Almada Dance Company / Almada international Dance Festival.

At the award ceremony on Sun. May 23rd at 6 p,m. the jury – Roos van Berkel / NL, Britta Lieberknecht / D and Johanna Bodor, HU – awarded the following prizes. See also laudations below:

  • awarded performer:

“Study nO.1/ Etude nO1”. – Canada / choreography & dance: Jason Martin

  • Newcomer – awarded duo:

“Introtention Coda” – Israel / choreography: Anat Oz / dance: Shani Licht & Anat Oz

  • Newcomer – awarded solo:

,,._’:.!,.-^.?’ (comma, full stop) – Germany (Düsseldorf) / choreography & dance: Etienne Sarti, composition: Kaspar Kuoppamaki und Clarissa Ray Porst

  • awarded Duo:

“UNCIA” – Greece / choreography & dance: Danae Dimitriadi & Dionysios Alamanos

  • awarded Solo:

“Stop Making Sense” – Netherlands / choreography & dance: Alesya Dobysh

The jury prizes include an invitation to the SzólóDúo Fesztivál 2022 in Budapest in January for all prize winners (the prize money supports travel and accommodation costs and is donated by the Kunstsalon Foundation Cologne).

The winning solo (Alessya Dobysh) and duo (Danae Dimitriadi & Dionysios Alamanos) will also receive an invitation to the Almada international Dance Festival 2021 in Portugal. The prize money for these two productions will be increased by the amount of the travel costs by the Kunstsalon Foundation Cologne

Laudations of the jury:

Awarded dancer: Jason Martin / ‘Etude no. 1

„Jason Martin permeates the screen with high technical skill and great dynamic sensitivity. Martin’s body-mind is a vessel of dance vocabulary that seamlessly coalesces into a strong signature. The jury is convinced by the humble, honest curiosity of an inner journey that seeks to bring us closer to the unspeakable in our existence.“

Newcomer – awarded duo: Anat Oz / ‘Introtention Coda

„’Introtention Coda’ exposes a toxic interdependence and an addictive need for approval. Anat Oz’s satire references #metoo and criticises the power relationship between choreographer and dancer. A relentless duet of two excellent dancers that pulls the veil off the dark side of the dance world with humour, power, courage and irony. „

Newcomer – awarded solo: Etienne Sarti / ,,._’:.!,.-^.?’ (comma, full stop)

,,._’:.!,.-^.?’ (comma, full stop) confronts us with virtuoso combinations of expressions of uncertainty and shyness. One can almost hear the broken sentences that finally drown in failure and feel the eternal loss. Sarti’s manifold repetitions, transformations of pedestrian movement and fractals of gesture allude to techno dance juxtaposed with seemingly unmanly gentleness and vulnerability.“

Awarded Duo: Danae Dimitriadi & Dionysios Alamanos / ‘UNCIA’

„Gestures that cut into the darkness of space: sharp as knives or gently floating. ‘UNCIA’ captures every second of our attention with dynamic shifts, highly detailed movements and a spellbound, inward-looking attention that creates full synchronicity between the two dancers. A powerful, poetic duet that makes the dancers’ faces barely recognisable. And keeps us guessing: are they each other’s spirit, alter ego, dominator, slave, core, shell, twin, resonator or stimulus?“

Awarded Solo: Alesya Dobysh / ‘Stop Making Sense’

„In her solo ‘Stop making Sense’, Alesya Dobysh throws herself around the room on the edge of controllability. Inspired by visual artist Robert Longo’s ‘Men in the City’, Dobysh creates unstable ground by brilliantly exchanging falling figures with rapid footwork, spins and contortions. A unique language with rhythms that make the body vulnerable and allow it to breathe unpredictability.“

The following prizes were awarded by the audience:

Friday, May 21st, 2021:

Best Solo:

,,._’:.!,.-^.?’ (comma, full stop) – Germany (Düsseldorf) / Choreography & Dance: Etienne Sarti, composition: Kaspar Kuoppamaki und Clarissa Ray Porst

My own echo chamber” – Germany (Mannheim) /choreography & dance: Georgia Begbie & Peter Hinz

12. INTERNATIONALES TANZFESTIVAL SOLODUO NRW + FRIENDS – 2020

12. INTERNATIONALES TANZFESTIVAL SOLODUO NRW + FRIENDS – SPECIAL EDITION

We do thank all the participating artists of this years special solo edition for their inspiring performances at Barnes Crossing and herewith announce the winners:

Price of the audience aswell as Best Solo Newcomer
Djamila Polo with the choreography „….didladid”

”Djamila presents an outstanding movement language and performance that creates a dysphoric confusion for us. She creates the illusion of a deconstructed body gradually putting itself together. Llittle glimpses of the classical emerge while keeping a sense of the absurd. We look forward to see more work of this young artist.“

Best Dancer – Nitsan Margaliot with the choreography „Returning “

“Embodying gravity and momentum Nitsan created volume in the space around him and inside himself. We were able to feel him as he articulated and then transmitted the sensations he produced with his movement. Through the course of the performance he evolved through a series of states which felt both personal and transparent.”

Best Solo – Philipp Caspari with the choreography „Flow my tears – an interdisciplinary Solo performance“

“Singing “Flow my Tears” the most renowned song of the baroque composer John Dowland, Philipp interrupts the clarity of his obviously well-trained voice with physical impulses that shimmer between the grotesque, the violent and the humorous. Disturbing the ethereal indulgence of the song, he reminds us that these sounds are coming from the flesh of an earthly body.“

1. Beatrice Panero / Solo / Trier
Title: stopNOstop
The piece „stopNOstop“ represents both human addiction to social networks and the need to escape from it. Chiada Rontini dances and expresses herself with great dynamic movements… she goes through a journey of meditation, temptation, dependence… in the end she finds herself back with the memory of that indelible feeling of having been “possessed”.

2. Jun Chun Zhang / Duo / Essen
Title: Lumos
In the darkness, we try to struggle, just because we can’t use our eyes. We hurt each other, try to catch and tear, hold and drop, just to shake our fear away. But at the end, we realise, when we close our eyes and give in to the endless flow of power in the darkness, we are safer like ever before. So let’s just trust the little light in our heart, help each other, follow each other, and continue to go forward. The end of the tunnel is always bright.

3. Mahalia Horvath / Solo / D/Essen
Title: Shoes to lose
The piece is about a woman who wears highheels the whole day. After a short break – taking off the shoes – one feet doesn’t want to go back into the shoe. The feet is getting alive and a fight between the woman and her feet starts! Who is going to win?

4. Richard Oberscheven / Solo / Frankfurt
Title: As I Would Like…
How can I enter other spaces, situations and conflicts? All I have is empty space and by rotating around myself I have (new) directions and encounters. Each rotation affects my dancing and causes new events. A different feeling, a different colour, a different image and a different dynamic. A living architecture of the body.

5. Friederike Frost & Arian Sajina / Duo / Köln
Title: breathe (working title)
Time, breathing, battle – these three aspects rule the work and give the structure and timeline of the duo. The time of the duo is restricted by a clock- when it rings, the duo will end. Next to the time limit, the rhythm is dominated by the breathing of the dancers. Experimenting with the restriction of breathing, movements follow different patterns. Additionally, the dancers are with AND in competition to each other. These aspects that are rooted in urban dance battles create an intense and ongoing tension.

6. Rolf Dennemann / Solo / Dortmund
Title: Mondnacht
Although this choreography is inspired by German romanticism, Rolf Dennemanns presence reaches far beyond “just” emotional movements with arms and gestures. A radical, startling staging, a reduced choreography in which only the upper body is visibly moving.

7. Yunjung Kim / Solo / Italy
Title: Long Time No See 2015
Experience and existence are in a mutual relationship. From the audience’s perspective and the performer’s sense, we experience different formations in space. It starts from the essence of metaphysical movement as a dance performance and the relationship between looking and facing each other.

8. Lotta Sandborgh / Solo / München
Title: Eve alone in the garden
This piece is about humane weakness for temptations and consumption of the planet. Taking it back from the start the dancer works with the image of Eve and Adam. What if Eve was alone in the garden? Would she have kept on eating the apple and become more and more addicted to it?

9. Maria Kobzeva / Duo / Offenbach
Title: correlate correspond coordinate (working title)
Two individuals meet. They approach one another by confronting, combating, clashing, conflicting, experiencing, facing and bearing each other. It is a constant shift between resistance and acceptance, to finally arrive at a place of balance, humbleness and mutual understanding.

10. Beomseok Jeong / Solo / Wuppertal
Title: H-I-P (Hustle it up)
What is “dance” for me? Is it hiphop? B-boying? Popping? Contemporary? Sometimes i seem to loose everything – everything I did before. But now I don’t wanna loose my dance anymore. I will dance. However I want.

11. Daniel Rakovsky / Duo / Freiburg
Title: Amour muet (R&J)
Having no time is symptomatic of our contemporary daily life. For all these people this piece offers a danced version of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet in only 6:30 min. What remains from the romanticism of the tragedy? And can hurry lead us to new aesthetics, maybe even revealing to us new dimensions of the tragedy?

SATURDAY PROGRAMM – 25.05.2019 (ÄNDERUNGEN VORBEHALTEN)

1. Federica Esposito / Duo / Italy
Title: Iperuranio: The long and the short of it
Exploring the concepts of mimesis (imitation), metessi (the relationship between the world of ideas and sensible things), parousia (the presence of ideas in sensible reality) and aitia (ideas as the cause of things), two figures travel into an evolving space. Going through moments of connection, distance, observation and a gentle disrespect, the two performers will sometimes get confused about what is real and what is ideal.

2. Lin Verleger / Solo / Köln
Title: Ficken und Schläge
Our past has an huge impact on our identity, on the present and on the future. We show a small percentage of our personality to others – and how little do we know about ourselves: How much does the past weigh on the present and can we overcome it to arrive in the moment?

 3. Or Marin / Duo / Israel
Title: Like a sex machine
Everyone is an enemy. Everyone is being loved. A loving enemy, enemies as lovers, shooting words, kissing bombs. Presenting their bodies as an exhibition of unique and elaborative weapons. Bodies that are working together and becoming an extraordinary machine gun. Body as an occupied territory, a fire zone, a tool of war, a tool of love. That’s how sex should be. Like a sex machine. *Includes Partial Nudity*

4. Gonçalo Cruzinha / Solo / Stuttgart
Title: Um pouco mais de amor
“Ein bisschen mehr Liebe” is a dance theater solo piece that brings a story based on loneliness. It calls for the relation between time and behavior towards one another, the feeling that is hidden beyond the language and expression of our actions and movements. It gives a poetic position to the excessiveness of living inside of ourselves.

5. Stella Kolodzey & Magdalena Öttl / Duo / Greven
Title: Back in a second
We find ourselves being placed in situations, where we would like to escape from. Inflamed, volatilized and unexcused dissolved. Balk or follow. Endless excuses, begging for permissions, stucked in the timing of dependencies. What if we missed the moment where we could have left? The piece „back in a second“ is grabbing for an instant urge to escape society. An introverted fight concentrated in a restless and constantly weighing Duett.

6. Celeste Ayus Motta   / Solo / Spain
Title: Roots
Roots is an ode to nature, a reflection of who we are and where we are going to; and how to reconnect with our origins and life. PLASTIC is the biggest enemy of marine fauna and forests. Its sound, texture and movement generate artistic filters that the solo uses to remind us that we are part of nature.

7. Sarah Herr & Meret Rufener / Duo / Mannheim
Title: 2talk2
A dynamic and physical partnering piece with SwissGerman und Dutch speaking. Two persons, in a way depending on each other, still everyone in his own movie. Special is the encounter of language and movement, appearing next to each other, on top of each other and beside each other. There is the monotony of every day life encountering the growing relation of two people attempiting to share their big need to talk.

8. Karolin Stächele / Duo / Freiburg
Title: MYTH
This duet is an extract of a 90 minutes piece of 5 dancers: a duet of two human beings as animalistic creatures. Both of them are torn between instinct and logical mind, between fighting and playing, loving and hating.

9. Alexandra Kostopoulou / Solo / Greece
Title: Artemisia
This solo piece is inspired by Artemisia Gentileschi, an Italian Baroque painter in the generation following that of Caravaggio. The first work of the young Artemisia was “Susanna and the Elders”. A coquetry dimension is attributed to the female figure, that faces psychological violence and overwhelms with horror and panic. This painting shows the sexual accosting by the two Elders as a traumatic event. Artemisia also painted many pictures of strong and suffering women that take action and female symbols of resistance against male potency.

10. Elisabeth Kaul & Tess Lucassen / Duo / D/Heidelberg
Title: Breaking the WOW
“Breaking the WOW’ looks at a society that lives in awealth of possibilities, blessings and superlatives. Taking the iconic image of a – beautiful and elegant – flamingo. These extravagant creatures seem to be the representation of what we strive for. What happens though if we scratch the surface? Soon the flamingo will show his flaws and fall into a cycle of insecurities and competition.

11. Christina Karpouzou & Polina Chrisafi / Duo / Greece
Title: HER
“HER” is a new a contemporary dance duet created by enRoute Dance co. which at this point of its creation, it depicts in a physical way not only a woman’s refusal to behave herself according to informal rules that define her social status in a stereotypical love relationship between a man and a woman, but also it symbolizes her battle to stand equally opposite the other half of this relationship. The main source of inspiration and study for this piece are all these social stereotypes and roles that have been imposed to each genre respectively, which are well rooted behaviorisms and fabricated identities that pass from generation to generation integrated to every human being’s constitution which set this unequal situation a still ongoing battle.

WORKSHOPS/RAHMENPROGRAMM

There is a big interest among young artists to exchange experience, to discuss about artistic concerns and questions. With the making of the first own works and pieces questions arise, which cannot be answered with the help of an institution when the artists are freelancing. With our workshop we want to offer a space for this exchange. This year the theme of the workshop will be: concepts of the body.

8. INTERNATIONALES TANZFESTIVAL SOLODUO NRW + FRIENDS – 2016

DIE GEWINNER:

Best Solo -“One hundred” von und mit Federico Rodolfo Zapata González, Essen (D):
One hundred is a crazy comedy with a ‘count-up’ that shows the stress of quantifying the body in dance as well as in sports. Federico combines strong physicality and plays with masculinity within a musical, clever structure.

Best Solo Nachwuchs – “Ranunculus” von und mit Daniella Eriksson, Falun Schweden:
Daniela seduces us as a poisonous flower. Ranunculus is an intimate solo that shows the shifting between a nasty little girl to a woman that tries to behave herself. It is great how she breaks a grounded, controlled and fast dance style with very precise theatrical gestures.

Best Duo – “Yoku” von Takashi Yamamoto/ Mit Takashi Yamamoto und Chih-Lin Chan, Coburg Deutschland:
A couple finds each other in a very cautious way. Takashi Yamamoto and Chih-Lin Chan explore the difficulties of a love relationship. Within a very tender and highly sensitive movement style they transform ‘Yoku’ into a very poetic and spiritual encounter.

Best Duo Nachwuchs – “DUPLEX” von und mit Debora Regoli & Aurora Fradella, Pontedera/Palermo Italien:
A heavy breathing gives life to two strange creatures. Debora Regoli and Aurora Fradella show ‘man as a rational animal’ in a strong female duet. They are developing a movement style that plays with the contrast between softness and wildness.

Best Dancer – Roni Chadash (“Ani-ma” von und mit Roni Chadash), Tel-Aviv Israel:
She can be a reptile, a spider, a crab – and a human? In her solo Ani-Ma, Roni Chadash runs through uncountable metamorphoses in a very unique interpretation of evolution. In surprisingly alienated ways her body twists, crawls, creeps and inverts.
A miscellaneous, profound dancer.

Publikumspreis Bestes Solo 2016 “Feeling Backwards” von und mit Katarzyna Monika Brzezińska (Choreografie und Tanz),Freiburg i. Breisgau

[How to be] almost there, Darsteller: Tim Behren und Florian Patschovsky.
