“I am the dark one, – the widower, – the inconsolable | The Prince of Aquitaine at the abolished tower; | My only star is dead|(…) I carry the black sun of melancholy.” Gérard de Nerval, The Wretched, 1854
Together with the devil’s advocate, the figure of the monster Maldoror, we scan the labyrinth of the soul of a desperate seeker who has the absolute will to find happiness.
We are in the uterus. This place, which branches out like a labyrinth, is characterized by notions of emptiness and darkness. We go deeper. Like a mythical figure, he has set up camp here: Maldoror. There is no foothold. Yet we return here, again and again, with all our selves, to listen to Maldoror. His outrage at the state of the world is bestial. It is our hidden despair. We share with him the longing to remain part of nature. The figures
he creates are thought experiments: even the most evil of them search with us for the meaning of love. Soon we are with him at the place where it all began: on the shores of the ocean, to remember. We only know what home was after we have rejected it.

The Kristóf Szabó F.A.C.E. Ensemble has been working at the interface between visual arts and performing arts for over 10 years. With the F.A.C.E.D.A.R.K.-POST SCRIPTUM series, we are launching a small format that reevaluates the media used – theater, video art, audio art, light, dance – and seeks out the dark. We also
on texts by the Black Romantics and the Surrealists. Escape – Past – Remembering – Hoping for a happy future: the presentation gains its complexity from the perspective of the experimentally associated “uterus”, the intermedial world(s) womb. We find solace, perhaps salvation, in the company of Maldoror as we contemplate the migratory birds, the dogs, the sharks, the wind, the world’s oceans.
Rediscovering the author Lautréamont In 2024, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first Surrealist manifesto by André Breton, published in 1924. As one of the great forerunners of the dream world-creating movement, Breton named the Montevideo-born Lautréamont (actually Isidore-Lucien Ducasse), who had already died in Paris in 1870 at the age of 23. With The Songs of Maldoror, translated into German by Ré Soupault, he created an unprecedented work of spiritual power and the most intense images of longing.
We would like to rediscover Lautréamont outside of surrealism as a visionary of humanity – the 100th anniversary of surrealism offers a good opportunity.
